NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting

The NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting course is an introductory program designed to develop the fundamental knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe and proper use of a shotgun. Throughout the session, participants explore the mechanical functions of various shotgun actions, the components of shotgun shells, and the specific rules for safe handling in both field and range environments. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on the unique fundamentals of shotgun marksmanship, such as eye dominance, body alignment, and the fluid motion required to track and engage moving targets.

The course transitions from classroom theory to practical application on the range, where students gain hands-on experience in shooting at moving clay targets. Under the guidance of certified instructors, participants practice essential techniques like “leading” a target and proper follow-through to achieve consistent results. In addition to shooting skills, the program addresses the long-term responsibilities of shotgun ownership, including thorough cleaning, maintenance, and secure storage practices. Upon successful completion of the practical exercises and the written examination, students receive a course completion certificate, marking their readiness to participate in various shotgun sports and activities.

This course satisfies the training requirements to receive a Utah CCW Non-resident Permit. You do not need to have a California permit to apply. Get more bang for your buck by adding the Utah CCW to your list of licenses.
