The Department of Defense Stop the Bleed course is designed to empower bystanders to act as immediate responders in the critical minutes following a traumatic injury. The training focuses on the “three pillars” of bleeding control: recognizing life-threatening hemorrhage, applying firm direct pressure, and utilizing wound packing or tourniquets to halt blood loss. By teaching these simple yet vital techniques, the program aims to prevent death from traumatic bleeding before professional medical help can arrive on the scene.
Beyond technical skills, the course emphasizes the importance of scene safety and rapid communication with emergency services. Participants learn how to assess a situation quickly to ensure their own safety while providing life-saving intervention. Ultimately, this training transforms ordinary citizens into a critical link in the chain of survival, providing them with the tools and confidence necessary to save a life during an active shooter event, a vehicle accident, or a workplace injury.
